(MountEverest.net/K2Climb.net/Madrid)  Jacek Teler’s team on Nanga Parbat prepare for a similar celebration. The Polish winter expedition on Nanga parbat is fighting bitter cold and loads of snow in BC, currently pitched at 4,470meters on the mountain’s Diamir side. Leader Jacek Teler reported on -13ºC.

NANGA PARBAT – THE KILLER MOUNTAIN

When the sun shines, it smokes up there. The demons blow their horns and fairies cook their bread. (Local Legend)

The “Naked Mountain” as interpreted in the local language, is the “Ninth” in highest in the world and second highest peak in . Standing at the extreme western end of 24,000 Km Himalayan Range – just beyond the deep Indus Valley, culminates in an ice crest, 8125 M high. No other peak within 100 Km comes anywhere near to it’s size. It’s incomparable Rupal Face (southern side) is one of the greatest precipices in the world – a sheer drop of 5000 M.

A study by the Geo department of Peshawar University in calibration with European and US Universities reveal the fact that Nanga Parbat was became after the collusion of Asian and Indian plates some 400,000 year back. There is no major volcano beneath the Nanga Parbat whoever there are some selpher deposits.  Nanga Parbat is the fastest growing mountain on Earth.

Also notorious known as the “Killer Mountain”, it has so far taken the biggest toll of 16 human lives 7 climbers and 9 high porters in one time in the history of mountaineering.

The team has two high altitude porters; one is Qudrat Ali, Simone Moro’s climbing partner on Broad Peak in winter 2007/08.

DIARY OF THE LEADER. 
The weather  here isn’t the best, what can be seen through the window and on the meteo web pages. According to the optimistic prognosis our flight to the BC is postponed until next Sunday – 21st of December, so finally we will reach BC in calendar winter. (Are you proud of us Simone?:) Last time, under Dhaulagiri, during spring 2008 we have been waiting a fortnight for the chopper, so actual situation SO FAR does not discourage us.

We laugh that if we are going to wait for the weather window till March it is better for us to be here in Skardu  than in BC. Nights and days in the local hotel are not quite ?extreme? enough to provoke psychological problems. We are beginning to ask ourselves fundamental questions. All of us have doubts if spending few months with the companion of stinky mountaineers  is still better  than comfortable Porshe drive through Beverly Hills with the chosen celebrity on the side. Training our psyche we leave any ?bad thoughts? as far as possible outside dusty Skardu.

Just to make it clear we have 3 not 2 Pakistani climbers with us. We initially planned to have 2, but in the last moment, a naive belief in the Polish Alpine Association financial support stimulated us to hire the third one. 

Quadrat Ali is with us? the strong Pakistani climber and partner of Simone Moro during last winter Broad Peak expedition. Another local climber, Ali, was a member of the Russian K2 west face expedition in 2007. Amin, probably the toughest from the group of Pakistanis, has summited Nanga Parbat and GII. Lastly, Taqi is on one side a kitchen boy, on the other side he is well equipped and experienced (he has summited Broad Peak), and he is willing to contribute over BC. So, when it goes to the ?human force? we are well prepared. We consider fixing ropes also over 7000m.

During our acclimatization treks I have realized to be the oldest one on this expedition. This is a new thing to   me, because even on the winter Nanga Parbat Expedition in 2006/2007 I was considered to belong to the group of ?youngsters? and now… My actual position is closer to our Pakistani friends who are married and have 4-5 children. I cannot compare myself to Robert and Don who are still young guns without  fixed relationships.

We have to clear up Don’s matter. Don’s grandfather, Mr. Wachowiak has emigrated from the north of Poland  to Chicago before the I World War. The name of our expedition- Polish Broad Peak Expedition is though absolutely true and should be now clear for everyone. We ask our friends from the HiMountain office to organize for Don the temporary Polish Card while we are on the expedition. Reaching the Broad Peak summit in winter will surely mean for Don starting the procedure of getting Polish citizenship.

Now we are discussing all the strategic matters. Everybody has its own opinion but slowly we reach conclusions that satisfy all of us.

W oczekiwaniu na wylot.

Pogoda jest kiepska co widać gołym okiem za oknem i na internetowych stronach meteo. Lot helikopterem do bazy przesuwa się według optymistycznych prognoz na niedzielę 21 grudnia więc jednak będziemy w bazie w kalendarzowej zimie . Pod Dhaulagiri wiosną 2008 czekaliśmy na helikopter 14 dni więc teraźniejsze oczekiwanie nie robi na nas NA RAZIE wrażenia.

Żartujemy sobie, że skoro mamy wyczekiwać na okno pogodowe aż do marca to lepiej czekać w hotelu w Skardu niż tam w bazie. Noce i dni w hotelu są już wystarczająco „ekstremalne” żeby zacząć mieć kłopoty z psychą i zadawać sobie pytania fundamentalne. Nie jeden z nas powoli zaczynać mieć wątpliwości nad wyższością co najmniej miesiąca na lodowcu w towarzystwie zarośniętych towarzyszy nad spokojną jazdą czerwonym Porshe wzgórzami Beverly Hills u boku wybranej celebrity. Jednak trenując psychę odgarniamy od siebie „obrazki klęski” jak najdalej za zadymione Skardu.

Rozwiewając wszelkie wątpliwości: mamy trzech a nie dwóch wspinaczy Pakistańskich u naszego  boku. Planowaliśmy dwóch ale podpuszczeni optymizmem Komisji Himalaizmu PZA w ostatniej chwili zatrudniliśmy jeszcze jednego.

Quadrat Ali – duchem wspinacz, partner Simone Moro z zeszłorocznej zimowej wyprawy na Broad Peak. Ali- uczestnik między innymi rosyjskiej wyprawy na zachodnia ścianę K2 w 2007roku. Amin- podobno najmocniejszy w tej grupie – zdobywca między innymi Nanga Parbat i GII. Taqi to z jednej strony pomocnik kucharza, z drugiej strony jest dobrze wyekwipowany i doświadczony (zdobył Broad Peak), chętny do pracy powyżej bazy. Więc jeżeli chodzi o „moce ludzkie” to trochę ich mamy. Zakładamy, że bez poręczowania, nie odbędzie się nawet powyżej 7000m.

Na biwaku aklimatyzacyjnym uświadomiłem sobie, czy też uświadomiono mi, że jestem najstarszy na tej wyprawie. To duża nowość dla mnie. Nawet zimą 2006/2007 na Nanga Parbat byłem jeszcze w grupie „młodzików” a teraz…. Bliżej mi też do naszych kolegów pakistańskich, którzy mają żony i po 4-5 dzieci niż do moich partnerów wyprawowych Roberta i Dona – wolnych strzelców bez obciążeń i zobowiązań.

Wyjaśnienia wymaga sprawa Dona. Otóż Don jest po dziadku, który wyemigrował przed I wojna światową  z północy Polski do Chicago – Wachowiak.  Nazwa naszej wyprawy Polish Broad Peak Expedition jest więc jak najbardziej dopuszczalna. Kolegów w biurze HiMountain prosimy o załatwienie Donowi tymczasowej karty Polaka zanim wejdzie na szczyt. Wejście Dona na szczyt  będzie dla niego jednoznaczne z rozpoczęciem procedury ubiegania się o Polskie obywatelstwo.

So how did they do it in the eighties? Here a glimpse of winter climbing ‘Polish style’: The Nanga Parbat climbers are clearing trail for porters in three feet of snow.

Nanga Parbat: only Allah knows

The Polish team is approaching Nanga Parbat in over one meter (3 ft) of fresh snow. “We are clearing the trail for the porters,” Jacek Teler reported yesterday. “We want to establish BC as close as possible to Nanga’s Diamir face but – how far will the porters reach? Insh-Allah.”

“If they reach the spot we’ve planned, we’d save a lot of time and hauling efforts.”

Nanga Parbat: staff camping out in mess tent

The Polish Winter Nanga Parbat expedition has managed to set up Base Camp, although not as close to the beginning of the route as they had hoped. “Our BC is at 4,065m. We are 5 km away from Diamir face – since there is over 1,3 meters (four feet) of snow on the way.”

“Our local staff is spending the night inside the mess-tent, looking for some shelter from the wind,” Jacek added.
