4. Climbing Narc.

I started climbing at the end of 1999 and I have been hooked ever since. So hooked in fact that I often times find myself fighting one over-use injury after another. I started this blog in Februrary of 2007 after my narcissism fueled compulsive behavior led to my most difficult climbing injury to date: elbow tendinitis.

At the time, there were a lot of sites on the internet devoted to climbing, but I had yet to find one that tried to pull it all together so that people didn’t have to search 20 sites to find out what was going on. Hopefully, if you are as psyched about climbing as I am, you will enjoy all the different climbing content I am trying to bring together in this one centralized location.

6. Kate and Mark’s Excellent Adventures.

Kate is in her late-20s and currently attending Colorado State University’s graduate program in the Atmospheric Sciences. She hopes to have a Phd in climatology and atmospheric physics sometime in the next decade or so. But for the time being, she’s thrilled to be living with her wonderful husband and happy dog here in Northern Colorado.

Mark is approaching his mid-30s and is working as a device programmer for a fun local company. He loves this job as he gets to play with all kinds of new and cool technologies, and he gets to bring Liv into work with him. She sleeps in his cube and sometimes helps him code.

As a family, we all try to live full, balanced lives. We spend most of our weekends out enjoying the sunny rocks, trails, and snow in the western US. We travel a fair bit, as well, and are always up for a new and exciting adventure!

Hopefully, this blog will give a quick daily glimpse into our lives as students, scientists, programmers, rock climbers, backcountry dwellers, travelers and human beings (or dogs in Liv’s case).

I want to present fun climbs for all of us, including weekend warriors who work for a living. Germans, who coined the term “sport climbing” (Sportklettern) have a word for this: Genußklettern (the German ‘ß’ denotes a combination of s plus z). In French, they call it Plaisir. The late Jürg von Känel, who wrote the guidebooks to Switzerland, Schweiz Extrem and Schweiz Plaisir, told me that they sell the Plaisir guide 95% of the time. I hope to write similar books for other parts of the United States (you tell me where you want them).”

8. The Life of a Relic.

From the blog: On October 8, 2007 I retired from the U.S. Department of Justice, where I spent 21 years enforcing the Clean Air and Water Acts and other laws to protect our environment. I am married to a terrific woman (Lois) and have two adult daughters (Valerie and Karen) who bring me joy every day, even though they are busy with their own lives and not around much. At age 54 I started racing a Miata on road tracks with the SCCA. In 2006, Karen persuaded me to resume rock climbing, something I had not done for 35 years. Chapter 1 of a novel about King Alfred the Great of Wessex (England) sits on my shelf, but I have been too busy to get any more of it written.

Kinga Baranowska – (born 1976) – polish mountaineer. Currently living in Warsaw. She summited her first eight-thousander – Cho Oyu – in 2003. Failed on attempt to reach one of the most difficult seven-thousander Jengish Chokusu in Tian-Shan range. In 2006 she successfully reached the top of Broad Peak. On the June 11, 2007 summited Mount McKinley and one month later on July 18 she successfully climbed Nanga Parbat. On year later she summited Dhaulagiri (May 1, 2008 ) – her first attempt to reach the summit from north-east face, in September, 2007 failed.

Climbers summited Dhaulagiri May 01, 2008. Teams : Iván Vallejo (his 14th 8000er), Ferrán Latorre, Nacho Orviz, Fernando Gonzalez-Rubio, Edurne Pasaban (her 10th 8000er), Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner (her 11th 8000er), David Göttler, Carlos Pauner (his 8th 8000er), Marta Alejandre, Asier izaguirre, Alex Txicon, Muptu Sherpa and Polish Kinga Baranowska all summited Dhaulagiri in 40km/h winds, thunder and lightning on the summit.

Kinga Baranowska the first Polish woman climber to reach the Summit of Dhaulagiri.

Kinga Baranowska – (ur. 1976) – pochodzi z Kaszub, mieszka w Warszawie.

Jedna z najlepszych himalaistek młodego pokolenia. Jest Członkiem Zarządu Klubu Wysokogórskiego Warszawa (od 2008 r.), należy do sportowego teamu Alpinusa (Alpinus Expedition Team). Od kilku lat związana zawodowo z branżą teleinformatyczną. W Klubie Wysokogórskim Trójmiasto ukończyła kurs skałkowy i tatrzański.

Wspinanie poza granicami Polski zaczęła od Alp m.in. Matterhornu. W 2002 roku wspinała się na Mt Kenia (Batian 5199 m), a także stanęła na wierzchołku Chan Tengri (7010 m) w górach Tien Shan.

Pierwsza wyprawa w Himalaje w 2003 roku zakończyła się sukcesem dzięki zdobyciu Cho Oyu (8201 m) – została tym samym 9 Polką w historii, której udało się wejść na wierzchołek ośmiotysięczny.

W 2004 roku brała udział w wyprawie na jeden z najtrudniejszych siedmiotysięczników świata – Pik Pobiedy (7439 m) w górach Tien Shan, trudne warunki atmosferyczne nie pozwoliły jej jednak na zdobycie wierzchołka.

W lipcu 2006 roku powróciła w góry wysokie z wyprawą Tryptyk Himalajski, tym razem w Karakorum, by stanąć na szczycie Broad Peak’a (8047 m) 22 lipca 2006 – jako 11 kobieta w historii.

Rok 2007 zaowocował zdobyciem Mount McKinley (6194 m) na Alasce, 11 czerwca zdobyła najwyższego szczytu Ameryki Północnej, podczas wyprawy aklimatyzacyjnej.

Rok 2007 to też wyprawy w Himalaje i Karakorum. W dniu 18 lipca 2007 jako czwarta Polka w historii stanęła na szczycie ośmiotysięcznika Nanga Parbat (8125 m), zdobywając szczyt słynną, prawie 4 km ścianą Diamir (jedyna kobieta na wyprawie, która wspinała się na Nangę w tym sezonie). Na Dhaulagiri (8167 m) dotarła do wys. 8076 m, jednakże z racji zbyt niebezpiecznych warunków musiała zrezygnować ze szczytu (patrz Dhaulagiri 8167 – bez szczytu, zabrakło naprawdę niewiele).

1 maja 2008 po długim i wyczerpującym ataku szczytowym, przeprowadzonym w towarzystwie śmietanki światowego himalaizmu (m.in. Valery Babanov, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner zobacz post – Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner summited Dhaulagiri. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner zdobyła Dhaulagiri. /Version english and polish/, Edurne Pasaban, Ivan Vallejo), Kinga Baranowska (Alpinus Expedition Team, KW Warszawa) jako pierwsza Polka w historii stanęła na wierzchołku siódmego co do wysokości szczytu świata – Dhaulagiri (8167 m n.p.m.).

Oto niektóre z jej licznych osiągnięć:

-Matterhorn (4478 m) – od strony włoskiej oraz wiele szczytów w Alpach, m.in. w masywie Monte Rosa -szczyty w górach Afryki (m.in. Kilimandżaro, Jabel Toubkal).

June 25, 2008 Peter Hamor and Piotr Morawski reached the summit of Gasherbrum I (8 068m) at 1.30 pm local time in alpine style by the Spanish route, which merges to American route. The top was bagged after ten days on the mountain, struggling in deep fresh snow with 20 kg heavy backpacks. According to Peter Hamor, they both traversed the summit and descended to Gasherbrum La Col.

July 6, 2008 Peter Hamor and Piotr Morawski reached the summit of Gasherbrum II (8 035m) at 9.15 am local time.

Polskie lato w Karakorum – wyprawy 2008.

Tryptyk Reaktywacja. Trawers Gasherbrumów i Broad Peaku.

Piotr Morawski zdobył szczyt Gasherbrum I (8 068m) 25 czerwca o 13.30 lokalnego czasu.

Z sukcesem dokonał trawersu Gasherbrum I, zdobywając szczyt w stylu alpejskim, pokonując w dolnej części tzw. drogę hiszpańską (prawa grań południowo-zachodniej ściany), a wyżej — drogą pierwszych zdobywców (Amerykanie w 1958 r.).”

Piotr Morawski 6 lipca o godz. 9,15 czasu lokalnego zdobył Gasherbrum II (8035 m).

Tak o wejściu pisze Piotrek: “Mimo prognozy pogody wyszliśmy do góry. Ze względu na wiatr i nadciągające chmury poszliśmy na drogę normalną, o 9:15 byliśmy na wierzchołku G2, już we mgle i opadach śniegu. Już jesteśmy z powrotem w c4, jutro odpoczynek.”
Himalaiści są w trakcie trawersowania masywu Gasherbrumów – został im jeszcze G III.

Poprawa pogody. O godz. 4 do obozu pierwszego na wysokości 6000 m. wyszli Michalak, Szut, Bigda, Duda i Zimnicki. Reszta wychodzi o 3 w nocy, w planach założenie obozu drugiego na 6400 i obozu trzeciego na 7000 m.

Wczoraj na wysokości 5800 przy pogarszającej sie pogodzie został założony depozyt. Dzisiaj przy padającym śniegu wszyscy zeszli do bazy. Prognozy przewidują 3 dni opadów.

Wczoraj ekipa dotarła do bazy na wysokości 5100 m n.p.m. Dzisiaj odpoczynek i przepakowanie sprzętu. Jutro nad ranem 8 osób wyruszy założyć obóz. Jerzy Kawiak ma zapalenie ścięgna achillesa i zostaje w bazie. O godz. 20, po kolacji chłopaki gotowi do nocnego wyjścia przez Lodowiec Abruzzi w celu założenia obozu pierwszego na wys. 6000 m, a może i drugiego na 6400.

Nadal wędrujemy karawaną po lodowcu Baltoro. Wczoraj 10 godzin do Urdukas, dzisiaj 7 godzin do Goro II .Marsz przez gruzowisko ciężki ale rekompensata w widokach.

Po18 godzinach w autobusie dotarliśmy do Skardu. Na bazarze zrobiliśmy ostatnie zakupy. Jutro ostatni etap jeepami, dalej już piechotą. Nadal ponad 30 stopni.

Dzisiaj odebralismy resztę bagaży z lotniska, nic nikomu nie zginęło, a nawet zarobilismy po 35 funtow – to rekompensata Britisha za dzień opóźnienia. O 14.00 byliśmy w ministerstwie turystyki na briefingu.
Trochę o warunkach: w Islamabadzie temperatura nie do zniesienia, wilgotność bliska 100%
czujemy się jak w saunie, więc z niecierpliwością oczekujemy na godzinę 5 rano jutro, kiedy to mamy opuscić wilgotne islamabadzkie piekło.W Islamabadzie jest godz 21 (w Polsce 17) i jesteśmy na powitalnym obiedzie u szefa obsługującej nas agencji Hunza Guides – Amira Khana.

Uczestnicy dolecieli do Islamabadu. Przymusowy postój – nie doleciało aż 8 z 12 worów. Powitanie z agencją z kwiatami, spotkanie z przewodnikiem wyprawy. Kwatera w hotelu w pokojach 2-osobowych. Parno i pada.

Podczas bardzo miłego spotkania Pan Prezydent życzył członkom wyprawy wytrwałości w dążeniu do swoich marzeń i celów przekazał również flagę z Gryfem Szczecińskim oraz znak wizji Miasta – Floating Garden.

(Jun 30, 2008 K2Climb.net) A search has been ongoing for Slovak Vlado Plulík, 45, on Broad Peak over the weekend. His climbing partner Dodo Kopold reported that Russian Valery Babanov climbed in stormy weather all the way to 2 looking for the mountaineer, whose tracks were covered by snow.

4-5 more climbers were searching around C1 while Dodo looked below. Dodo reports that Vlado was last seen descending by the Belarusian team at around 6500 meters.

Recap

Following their rest stop 300 meters below the top, seems Dodo and Vlado returned to their cache at 7200 meters to sleep on the 25th. The two climbers headed back up for the summit on Thursday morning, in very bad conditions and separated at 8 pm. Dodo continued up through a new variation of the route and reached the top at about 9 pm.

Dodo made a bivouac at 8000 meters on descent, reportedly without gear or a tent. Back at 6000 meters, Dodo called his home team, reporting he had not yet met up with Vlado. The climber said he had seen Vlado’s tracks and presumed his mate was with the Belarusian team in camp 1.

The latest report

In the latest dispatch, Dodo reports that the two climbers had hoped to go for the top through a direct line over a rocky wall when conditions changed for the worse on the final summit push. They were alone; there were no fixed lines and no camps.

Deep snow and rock fall made Vlado opt for the normal route instead; the two decided they would meet up on the summit and descend together.

But Vlado decided to bivouac at 8 pm below the rocky summit, while Dodo was forced to bivouac at 8000 meters just below the main summit.

On descent the next morning, Dodo followed Vlado’s tracks until 6500 meters where he lost them. He believes Vlado probably fell.
Dodo emphasizes that climbing on 8000 meter altitude is very difficult, and hard to understand for those who haven’t been that high up, “Himalaya is not the Alps,” he states.

Deja vu from 2007

The current situation comes only one year after Dodo lost another partner in the death zone, on Shisha Pangma in 2007.

”We separated,” Dodo said back then about Marek Hudak. “Marek was a bit slower than me, but I always held for him. On summit day, I waited for him about 200 meters below the summit.” Dodo said that Marek offered to descend to C2 when he couldn’t keep up with Dodo on the final summit push.

50 meters below the summit, Dodo looked back and spotted Marek descending along the old, fixed lines. Taking 30 minutes for the last steps to the top; Dodo soon quickly descended in Marek’s tracks. At 7600m, on a fixed line anchor-point, Dodo found Marek’s ice axe. There were no more footprints. Dodo figured that Marek fell while changing from one fixed line to another.

Partner with limited high altitude experience

Marek Hudak was new to high altitude when he – together with Dodo – climbed Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma last year. Shortly before the accident on Shisha, the two had shared two cold bivouacs on the British route for 3 days with no sleeping bags and no tents.

Vlado Plulík had previously summited Everest without oxygen in 1998 and participated in expeditions to Shisha Pangma and Kangchenjunga. The climber was also a marathon runner and had done difficult rock climbs in the Tatras. This month, Vlado and Dodo had climbed on G1 (which Dodo alone topped out), and only days later summited G2 together before heading for the hard and lonely Broad Peak ascent.

In Dodo Kopold’s 6th 8000er in only one year; there are currently no signs of Vlado Plulík on Broad Peak, “only silence” Dodo Kopold reports.
