International Everest award conferred each year on May 29 is due to honour veteran mountaineer Appa Sherpa this year.

Nepal Mountaineering Association, the mountaineering body in the country has announced that it has decided to confer this year’s Everst award to Appa to honour his contineous devotion in development and promotion of mountains in the country. The award comprises Rs 5 million cash and a letter of appriciation.

Meanwhile, the record-holder Mt Everest conqueror Appa has said that he did not reach atop the world’s highest peak to set a record but to let the whole world hear about the “cry of the Himalayas”.appa-sherpa.jpg

“I have already decided to abandon commercial climbing. But this year, I had a reason to make a sudden decision to climb Everest. I want to draw attention of the world about the melting of glaciers in and around the Mt Everest,” he said, talking to mediapersons at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Tuesday.

He also said climbing Everest is thrilling as ever but the world should be concern about the possible hazards the indigenous people of the mountain area may face any day, because of global warming and melting of glaciers.

This year he made 18th ascent to the 8,848-metre high Mt Everest.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation stated that four persons belonging 2008 IMG Everest Expedition II today scaled Everest. An eight-member team of AP Everest Expedition 2008 reached Everest summit on May 23, the ministry added.

Apa Sherpa reached the summit of Everest for a record 18th time at 5:45 am on May 22. Ang Mingma Sherpa of Thame village was with him, reports Ang Tshering.

Apa had no plans to make an 18th attempt this year until he heard about the Eco-Everest Expedition formed by Dawa Steven. The Eco-Everest expedition was created to study the effect of global warming on the glaciers of the Himalayas and to educate the people of the Himalayan highlands about the dangers of flooding due to increasing melt water.

The Eco Everest expedition summited Lhotse yesterday at 8:35 am. They stayed on the summit for nearly 45 minutes. Dawa Steven plans to descend to Camp II, rest, and then attempt the summit of Mt. Everest with fellow team members of the Eco Everest Expedition.

International Lhotse Expedition 2008 Summitters:

Dawa Steven Sherpa (Nepal), Stuart G. Smith (US), David Liano Gonjalez (Mexico), Nima Kanchha Sherpa (Nepal), Pemba Tshering Sherpa (Nepal), Palden Nyange Sherpa (Nepal).

Dawa Steven reached the summit of Cho Oyu from the north side in Autumn 2006, and the summit of Everest in Spring 2007.

The International Lhotse Expedtion 2008 is organized by Asian Trekking.

Sherpa summits Everest for record 18th time

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A mountaineering official says a veteran Sherpa guide has scaled Mount Everest for a record 18th time.

Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association says Appa reached the 29,035-foot summit along with several of his team members early Thursday.

Appa — like most Sherpas — goes by only one name.

As many as 59 climbers have scaled the world’s highest peak in the last three days and many more are headed to the summit because of favorable weather conditions.

Polskie wyprawy w Himalajach

Tej wiosny polska działalność w Himalajach skoncentrowała się w rejonie Dhaulagiri – szczyt ten atakują równocześnie aż trzy (!) polskie wyprawy. W pobliżu na trudnej i niebezpieczniej Annapurnie działa po raz kolejny wyprawa mBank Annapurna, a na Mount Everest chcą wejść uczestnicy projektu 7summits. Oto raport z frontu :

Wypróbowany w bojach team Piotr Pustelnik, Peter Hamor, Darek Załuski i Piotr Morawski za cel obrał pierwsze powtórzenie drogi czeskiej na północno-zachodniej ścianie Annapurny (8091 m n.p.m.).

Północno-zachodnia ściana Annapurny i droga Gabbarrova (droga czeska) wraz z miejscami potencjalnych obozów (C1, C2, C3)

Wyprawa po 52 dniach działalności niestety nie osiągnęła wierzchołka, a ostatni atak szczytowy miał dramatyczny przebieg. Po 12 godzinach wspinaczki, w bardzo trudnych warunkach, ekipa musiała 29 kwietnia zawrócić 150 metrów przed wierzchołkiem.

Oto relacja telefoniczna Piotra Morawskiego:

.niezła złośliwość losu z tą burzą, wierzchołek o godzinę, a wichura taka, że nie można ustać, a potem mgła i totalna śnieżyca. Dobrze, że nasz biwak znaleźliśmy.

.a burza taka, że nie daliśmy rady do trójki, złapaliśmy ten drugi biwak i czy wiesz, że przechodziły przez nas pioruny.

.uderzenia więcej niż 220 i strach.

Teraz himalaiści, już bezpieczni, odpoczywają na wysokości 7800 m (drugi biwak). Jak tylko warunki pogodowe pozwolą schodzą do bazy, gdzie mają żywność i gaz. Tam też podejmą decyzję co dalej.

Przypomnijmy, że gdyby na wierzchołek udało się Piotrkowi Pustelnikowi zostałby trzecim polskim zdobywcą wszystkich ośmiotysięczników i 14 wspinaczem na świecie, któremu udała się ta sztuka (ostatnim był Silvio Mondinelli).

Wszystkie opisywane niżej polskie wyprawy na Dhaulagiri postanowiły wspiąć się na wierzchołek od strony północno-wschodniej, drogą pierwszych zdobywców z 1960 roku, wówczas na szczycie stanęli: Kurt Diemberger, Albin Schelbert i Szerpa Nawang Dorje.

W skład wyprawy HiMountain na Dhaulagiri weszli bardzo doświadczeni himalaiści:

– Ryszard Pawłowski, Artur Hajzer, Robert Szymczak, Piotr Snopczyński i Bogdan Kaszycki.

Climbers summited Dhaulagiri.

11 of May, at 2:45 p.m. local time Artur Hajzer summited Dhaulagiri I together with his companion Robert Szymczak. After 20 long years he climbed an 8000er summit again! This was his first 8000er ascent after he stopped climbing because of the loss of his friend Jerzy Kukuczka. He summited Tirich Mir in 1983, Manaslu in 1986, Annapurna I in winter 1987, Shisha Pangma by a new route along the West ridge in the autumn of 1987 and Annapurna I East-Peak in 1988 by a new route. The last three ascents he was accompanied by Jerzy Kukuczka.

11 maja, o godzinie 14:45 czasu lokalnego, dwójka uczestników HiMalajskiej Wyprawy – Dhaulagiri 2008: Artur Hajzer i Robert Szymczak stanęli na szczycie “Białej Góry” (8167 m n.p.m.).

Niestety od początku ekipę tę prześladuje pech.

Najpierw wybory w Nepalu znacząco opóźniły rozpoczęcie akcji górskiej – karawana dotarła do bazy 17 kwietnia po 17 dniach! W związku z tym opóźnieniem wrócic do Polski musial Bogdan Kaszycki. Następnie uczestnicy zastosowali zasadę “wolni na podejściu, szybcy w ścianie” i już 19 kwietnia założyli obóz II na wysokości 6750 m. Niestety Artur Hajzer zaczął zdradzać objawy deterioracji wysokościowej, w związku z czym podjęto decyzję o błyskawicznym zejściu do bazy. Terapia okazała się skuteczna ponieważ już po paru dniach w bazie 26 kwietnia Artur Hajzer wspólnie Robertem Szymczakiem ponownie wyruszyli w górę.

Wyprawa dowodzona przez Annę Czerwińską w składzie Ola Ihnatowicz, Jurek Natkański i Piotr Szkarłat działa pod Dhaulagiri od 14 kwietnia.

W środę, 23 kwietnia Jurek i Piotr założyli obóz II na wysokości ok. 6800m. Niestety namiot stanął w niefortunnym miejscu – “Przeżyliśmy z Filipem dwie, dość nerwowe noce w tym namiocie. Cały czas nasłuchiwaliśmy, gotowi w każdej chwili do ucieczki” – relacjonuje Ania. Dopiero kilka dni później udało przenieść obóz w bezpieczniejsze miejsce i zaporęczować część drogi do obozu III. Następne wyjście jest planowane 3 maja.
